After gaining an undergrad degree in biology from Brown University, Tom Watkins earned his master’s from Columbia Journalism School and went to work for Medical Tribune, an international newspaper for doctors, where he rose from reporter to managing editor. He then joined CNN, where he worked primarily as a producer/correspondent on the TV side and as a news editor on the website. During his nearly 24 years at CNN, he was a member of teams that won three Peabodys, a duPont-Columbia Award and four News and Documentary Emmy Awards. Since 2014, he has edited more than a dozen books and worked in a variety of roles at the United Nations in New York and at the World Health Organization in Geneva.
